WELCOME  ~  Breathe in and be free, look around

Sky, and lots of it, with all the colours of a rainbow.  Beautiful sunrises for those who rise early, stunning sunsets at the end of the day.  Look outwards to the sea and capture the stark beauty of the scenery, the crashing waves to the shore, the waters teeming with wildlife.  Look inwards to the rolling countryside and the big, wide open spaces.  Fields and forests, villages tucked away, each with it's own particular character, no two alike.

And in between, we have one of the most dramatic coastlines of anywhere in the United Kingdom.  Sweeping golden beaches stretching for miles, and dunes that demand to be run up and slid down, and to get pleasantly lost in for a little while.

VITAL STATISTICS  ~  The most easterly town on the Scottish mainland, Peterhead lies 33 miles north of the beautiful granite city of Aberdeen and within a 45 minute drive through delightful scenery, past the glistening North Sea to your right and fields full of cows, sheep and crops to your left.  With never ending daylight for much of the year, this stunning area is a visitor's delight with so much to see and do.

Aberdeenshire's largest town with over 19,000 inhabitants, and Europe's premier white fish port, Peterhead lies at the very heart of Buchan, a very beautiful and vibrant part of North East Scotland.

Walking, cycling, climbing, swimming, surfing, fishing and riding are all activities worthy of mention as well as water sports and Buchan’s low rainfall and clean air make it ideal for outdoor pursuits. Click on ‘Activities’ to find out more.

The area is a golfer’s paradise and the decision of where to play your round of golf may not be that easy! Peterhead, Cruden Bay and Longside courses are on our doorstep and within Aberdeen and Grampian Highlands there are approximately 70 golf courses to be played.

For wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers we have everything, nature reserves, cliffs, woods and forests, dunes, golden award winning beaches and the glistening North Sea where you can whale and dolphin watch or spot the seals. The brilliant thing about Buchan is that you don’t have to go very far before your wildlife encounters begin.

And for those whose interest lies in the past, the North East of Scotland has the highest concentration of prehistoric sites and stone circles in mainland UK,. Architecture, history, people and a diverse and ever changing culture make it a must to visit. Buchan is the home of the Aberdeenshire Farming museum at Aden Country Park, other museums in the area document our rich maritime heritage.

White Horse and Stag on Mormond Hill PDF Print E-mail

Mormond Hill is the highest point in Buchan.  On the south west side is the Strichen White Horse. The horse is constructed of quartz on Mormond hill. It is 162' long by 126' high. The slope is is and the design offers a good view of the horse. The horse was cleaned in 1937, 1949, 1968, 1970, 1994 and again in July this year.
There are many different stories as to the origin of the horse. One story and the most widely accepted is that the horse was cut by Captain Fraser (family of the laird of Strichen) whose horse was shot from under him in a Dutch Battle of Gilzen  in 1794. A sergeant Henderson of New Deer offered him his horse but he was shot dead during the changeover. On his return Captain Fraser cut the horse as a memorial to him.
On the East of Mormond Hill is the White Stag. A figure of a stag made out of quartz stones; recorded as being cut in 1870 by Mr F W Cordiner of Cortes Estate, near Fraserburgh, to commemorate his wedding.  Cortes House is now provides 4 star self catering accommodation
